PUNE: An elderly couple who travelled by a Shivshahi bus from Nashik to Pune to attend a wedding were at their wits’ end after the woman received four SMSs stating that Rs 40,000 had been withdrawn from her bank account using her debit card on Friday afternoon.
When the wife, Anagha Vijay Karnik (60), unlocked her bag to check for the debit card, she was shocked to find cash, gold and diamond studded ornaments and other valuables, collectively worth over Rs 5 lakh, also missing from the bag.
Senior inspector Kalpana Jadhav, in-charge of the Alankar police station, told TOI, “Anagha and her husband, Vijay, had kept the bag on the overhead luggage rack of the bus, which contained the debit card and other valuables, besides the cash. They had alighted from the bus for a tea break at 11.45am at a hotel. They had their valuables and debit card with PIN written on it in the bag. The bus reached Shivajinagar bus terminus at 2.45pm and the Karniks reached their relative’s house in Kothrud around 3.15pm. Soon after reaching the house, Anagha received four SMSs stating that Rs 40,000 collectively has been withdrawn from her bank account by using the debit card.”
Jadhav said police have booked unidentified person/s under Section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code following a complaint registered by Anagha.
The officer said, “The Shivshahi bus has a CCTV camera and we have requested the MSRTC officials to supply us with the footage to identity the suspect/s.”
