THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If initial indications are anything to go by, universities in the state are set to achieve a marked improvement in terms of the timely announcement of results. A meeting of university pro-vice-chancellors held at the state higher education council here on Friday has resolved to take steps for the announcement of results of final semester degree examinations within a month after the conduct of examinations in March.

The review meeting on implementation of common academic and examination calendar has assessed impressive strides by most of the universities towards achieving the target. For example, universities could complete the first-semester admission in the month of June 2018 after three rounds of allotment. The first, third and fifth semester examinations were completed in the month of November and December 2018, centralized valuation camps were organized by all the affiliating universities in November by giving 10 days holiday for colleges. Fifth and third-semester degree results are to be published in the month of December itself and preparations are underway for publishing first semester results in the month of January 2019.

"The resolve to declare final semester degree examinations before April 30 would ensure that students would get ample time for seeking admission for higher studies," council member secretary Rajan Varughese said.

The review meeting assessed that all universities were increasingly making use of modernization and computerization of their academic and examination wings to facilitate timely publication of results. The meeting also saw universities agreeing to share the best practices in the realm of academic/examination reforms. The coded answer scripts used by Kannur University and the method followed by Cochin University for preparing the academic and examination calendar were a few areas identified for cooperation.

It was reported that the system of split vacation (November and May) practised by Sri Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady drastically improved the conduct of examination and publication of results in the University. It was suggested to adopt this split vacation system in other affiliated Universities also to lessen the problems in the conduct and publication of results.
