KOLKATA: Get ready to make the most of the coldest Christmas in Kolkata, at least in the past five years. The chill is here for a longer innings. The mercury has been below the normal mark in the past few days and is expected to remain so for now. Thanks to an uninterrupted flow of the cold and dry Northwesterly wind.
From 12.7 degree on the Celsius scale on Saturday, it climbed further down to 12,6 degree on Sunday. Met office expects it to go further down when Kolkatans get high on the Yule tide spirit, to stay around 12 degree Celsius mark.
“In the absence of any weather system that would block or retard the pace of the Northwesterly wind the chill factor will remain. And the chill spell is expected to be quite long this time around,” said an official at Regional Metorological centre Kolkata.
Last year the minimum temperature on Christmas in Kolkata was 14,7 degree Celsius in comparison to the previous year’s 17.1 degree Celsius. In 2105 and 2014 this measure stood at 18.1 and 20.3 degree Celsius respectively.
The dip in the mercury started last week after the rain triggered by cyclone Phethai. From 16.1 degree Celsius on Tuesday last it plunged by two degrees the next day. There has been no stop after that. By the coming weekend it might slip as low as 11 degree Celsius.
