KOLKATA: A doctor who was on duty at the ICCU of a south Kolkata nursing home has alleged harassment and physical assault by the relatives of an 18-year-old patient who had been rushed to the nursing home after complaints of chest pain. The incident was reported from Royd Nursing Home on Royd Street on Saturday.
Even though the doctor lodged a complaint at the Park Street police station, the nursing home authorities called the incident “minor”, caused by an altercation between the doctor and the patient’s family. The patient was later shifted to another hospital.
A police officer said they would check CCTV camera grabs to ascertain the sequence of the event at the nursing home and identify the people involved. “The patient’s relatives and friends barged in and abused me, while the patient’s ECG was going on. They also assaulted me,” the doctor claimed.
A nursing home official said, “We conducted an ECG, which was normal. But since the patient was in acute pain, the family insisted that he be treated immediately.
“We tried to reason with them and told them that some tests needed to be conducted before he could be admitted. But they got into an argument with the doctor and decided to take the patient to a bigger hospital,” he said.
The official added that the hospital had not lodged any police complaint as “there was no ransack and no one was assaulted”.
