LUCKNOW: Call it reverse psychology or 'Gandhigiri', Lesa has now chosen a unique way to get rid of 'katia' connections.
Instead of being slapped with a fine or a criminal case, people caught drawing up to 1 KW power illegally will be given a power connection now.
Chief engineer of Lucknow Electricity Supply Administration (Lesa) Madhukar Verma said that every month, around 500 cases of power theft are reported in the city. Of these, many are repeat offenders not deterred by fine and FIR.
"We have decided to install a 1 KW meter if a resident is caught using 'katia'. That way, their connection remains and they are monitored. The order applies only to residential connections," he said.
However, if the person is found drawing more than 1 KW through 'katia', a fine would also be imposed along with a new connection. For example, if a household is caught powering equipment like an AC through 'katia', then a new connection will be installed particularly for that equipment, he said.
