KOLKATA: Two youth – both without helmet -- were killed while riding a bike along the wrong flank on EM Bypass when they were hit by a truck in front of Apollo Gleneagles Hospital early on Sunday.

Sourav Khatik (19), who was driving the motorbike was killed on the spot while Mohammad Imran (24) who was riding pillion, was declared dead at a private hospital.

Police said, minutes before the accident, their third friend, who had been riding with the two had got down from the vehicle after they had refused to slow down.

“The third youth Sonu Balmiki is a witness to the accident. He says, after he got down in front of the subway near Hyatt Regency hotel, Khatik started speeding along the wrong flank and while he tried to take the service road in front of Apollo Hospital, they were hit by a truck. The two youths fell on the ground as the truck sped away towards Ultadanga,” said an officer of Phoolbagan police station.

The incident occurred around 1am. Both the deceased were residents of Cossipore in north Kolkata. Khatik used to drive a mini truck while Imran was an auto driver. The bike belonged to one of their friends, Sunny Shaw, from whom Khatik had borrowed the vehicle for the night.

“The three youths had been partying at a place near the stadium and had planned to come back to the spot after a ride along the EM Bypass and buy cigarettes from shops around Gautams on EM Bypass near Ultadanga,” said the officer.
