The man accused of raping a British national in South Goa on Thursday was remanded in police custody for 12 days on Friday.

The Canacona police produced Ramchandran (30), a native of Thanjavur, before the local Judicial Magistrate, First Class, for his remand and custodial interrogation.

Meanwhile, Goa Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jaspal Singh told reporters at the police headquarters that Ramachandran was arrested in December in connection with a theft at another beach village in North Goa, but had escaped from police custody.

“Primarily the motive was robbery. She was subsequently sexually assaulted. All her belongings, except for the cash, have been recovered. But now that he’s in our custody, we will try to recover the cash also,” Mr. Singh said.

The 42-year-old woman, a regular visitor to Goa, was raped and then robbed as she was returning to her guest house from a railway station at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday after she missed her train.
