Garbage scattered on the road at Headland Sada

Vasco civic body to procure two excavators for handling garbage

VASCO: Mormugao municipal council has decided to procure two excavators, exclusively, for handling garbage at Mormugao Solid Waste Treatment Plant (MSWTP) at Headland Sada.

Speaking to this daily, MMC chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar informed that the municipal authorities have hired an excavator to clear the dumps of garbage at the MSWTP.

“We are facing extreme hardship while clearing the garbage on a day-to-day basis at MSWTP, and the money paid to contractor towards the machine rent is high,” said Gaonkar and maintained that in order to save the money, the council has decided to procure an excavator which could be utilized at MSWTP and wherever required by the council.

“The council has taken technical sanction for procuring the machines. The proposal has been forwarded to the director of municipal administration for approval,” he said.

Meanwhile, MMC chairperson has disclosed that the council is facing hardship while managing  the garbage being collected door-to-door from all the 25-wards.

“The un-segregated garbage creates problem for the municipal workers. The garbage scattered outside the MSWTP at Headland Sada has become a nuisance for the public. People should try to hand over dry and wet waste separately to the garbage collectors, with the dust bins provided to them by the municipal authorities,” he said.

He also has disclosed that the council is looking for an alternative site for handling the municipal waste in a scientific manner.

“The director of municipal administration is also trying her best to identify an alternative site wherein the municipal authorities could shift the entire garbage to that location,” he said.

“The Urban Development Minister Milind Naik has taken initiative to clear the dumps of garbage at MSWTP thereby giving a relief to the people residing in and around the plant,” he added.
