Man dies shortly after found lying on north Queensland street

A man has been found lying lifeless on a north Queensland street in a "chance discovery" by police when they returned to a suburban party after receiving complaints on Friday.

Officers responding to a triple zero call from a passer-by arrived in Hunt Street in the Cairns suburb of Manunda and found the 20-year-old man on the road with significant injuries at 3.15am.

They tried to resuscitate the man and paramedics took over once they arrived at the scene, but the victim was declared dead.

The street was declared a crime scene with detectives and forensic officers swarming the area and examining the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ed Kinbacher said police were responding to other incidents reported about the party, returning to the address  for the second time following previous complaints.

"They were jut responding to complaints from the party in regards to events that were unfolding there," he said.

"It was a chance discover by the officers who first attended that he was found on the street."

Senior Sergeant Kinbacher said the homicide squad, Cairns CIB and other officers had begun investigations into the death but it was still too early to determine the cause.

"It appears some sort of violence has occurred, the specific of nature of which, we don't know," he said.

"We don't understand the cause or factors yet, it's simply too early to state.

"It is probable that a post mortem examination will be conducted in Brisbane tomorrow and obviously we'll have more information then."

Senior Sergeant Kinbacher said police were doorknocking and interviewing about 10 to 15 party-goers who were at the event.

He said the it was very sad to learn the man had died so close to Christmas.

"It's stressful for the family," he said.

"There is certainly a significant amount of pain and suffering by the people who knew this man last night were there as his family will be advised."

Anyone with CCTV footage or anyone who was in the area between 3am to 4am are urged to come forward.
