RAJKOT: A member of an illegal sand mining gang attempted suicide by jumping into a Narmada canal in Ishadara village of Dhrangadhra taluka in Surendranagar district on Friday.

The other members of the gang present at the spot jumped after Vikesh Devipujak (26) and rescued him from drowning. The police present there first took Devipujak to Dhrangadhra Civil Hospital and from there they brought him to Dhrangadhra taluka police station.

“The incident occurred during our routine drive against sand mafias in which we were seizing their tractors and trucks and fining them. As per the rules of the state mines and mineral department, the vehicles carrying illegal sands are supposed to be detained for a week and then they are released after their owners pay the fine,” said an official from Dhrangadhra taluka police station.

“Devipujak had recently bought a tractor on a loan. Fearing that his vehicle would be seized and that he would have to cough up a big fine, he jumped into the canal,” added the official.

Police seized a total of eight tractors and one dumper.
