Cold nights to continue for the next few days, says IMD

The city woke up to a chilly morning on Thursday, with minimum temperature dipping to a new low of 15 degrees Celsius for the season from 17.4 degrees Celsius recorded on Wednesday. This was three degrees below normal.

The previous lowest temperature this season was 16 degrees Celsius last week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast similar temperature for the next two days. Maximum temperature recorded on Thursday was 32.6 degrees Celsius.

For the last two years, the lowest minimum temperature has been around the 15-degree mark. In 2016, the coldest December day recorded 15 degrees Celsius, while last year, the lowest was 15.2 degrees. This means temperatures might fall further than the last two years in coming days. The all-time lowest for December is of 10.6 degrees in 1949.

K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director general (western region), IMD, said, “Gusty and dry winds during the day from the Himalayas over plains (north to northwestern) and at night (eastern to north eastern) brought the chill in the air. a similar trend is also seen in other regions of Maharashtra.”
