MPharm students find 2 questions missing from 1st exam

Nagpur: The Nagpur University’s (NU) exam section committed a serious blunder on December 12 by sending two missing questions of master of pharmacy (MPharm) first-semester exam after it had started at 9.30am. Three of the five specializations were not given the missing questions at all, putting the entire examination under cloud. TOI learnt about this gaffe on Thursday from students who appeared for the exam which goes on till December 24.
Students from 16 colleges in Nagpur and Wardha districts appeared for the exam which was conducted in five centres. The goof-up resulted in the paper being held up for over 45 minutes as the missing questions were handed out separately. It is not known how the exam centre transmitted the questions.
Pro vice chancellor Pramod Yeole, who belongs to the pharmacy faculty, was not available for comment. Director of examinations and evaluation Neeraj Khaty didn’t answer to repeated TOI’s calls and messages till late on Thursday evening. Earlier too, both the top officers had refused to answer queries regarding the goof-up in BSc third semester exam.
Students from several centres complained that no additional time was given for solving the question. They told TOI that when they went to report the issue, top NU officials refused to entertain them saying 40% examinees need to come forward with complaints.
The PG course has five different specializations — Pharmaceutics (PH), Pharmaceutical Chemistry (PC), Pharmacology (PL), Quality Assurance (QA) and Pharmacognosy (PG) — with all having one common paper in Modern Pharmaceutical Analytical Techniques. The problem occurred in this paper, which is the first of the four the students have to appear for. The total number of questions had to be 7. But some got just 5 and others 6. The exam was worth 75 marks and for three-hour duration.
The students of PH and PC were in a dilemma as they got the same set of missing questions. Those appearing for QA were not given the missing questions at all. Students and teachers complained that the last two questions should have been from their respective specialization.
According to teachers, the NU exam section may have forgotten to mail the second part of the question paper till 30-minutes after start of the exam. “In the melee, crucial time was lost and it appears the questions were dictated over phone which were then printed on separate sheets provided to students around 45 minutes later,” they said.
TOI is in possession of a second part of the question paper in which two additional questions meant only for one specialization (PH) are printed but the watermark of the centre is missing, making it amply clear that the paper was not set earlier.
Some principals from pharmacy colleges blamed the repeated mistakes in examinations to selection of experts on the important Board of Studies or substitute committee responsible for framing syllabus, paper setting and moderation.
Missing questions
* MPharma first semester students from five different specializations given incomplete question papers
* One one specialization — Pharmaceutics — got all the seven question out of which 5 are compulsory in the 75 marks paper
* As per syllabus, last two questions are from specific specialization while rests of the paper is common
* Students of Quality Assurance were denied the option of seventh question as they had to make do with only six questions
* NU had given two missing questions after 45 min to 1.15 hrs after start of exam
