Two persons, including a truck driver, died when his vehicle allegedly overturned while fleeing after he hit three pedestrians in north-west Delhi’s Mukundpur on Wednesday afternoon. Two others sustained injuries in the incident, the police said.
The deceased have been identified as 17-year-old government school student Shikha and truck driver Rajan Singh.
The police said Shikha’s classmate Khanchan, who sustained severe injuries, is critical. Umesh, a helper at a local shop in Mukundpur Chowk who was also injured, is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The police control room received a call at 2 p.m. regarding a truck hitting three people near the Mukundpur red light.
A team reached the spot and took Shikha to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Brushed past a vehicle
Preliminary probe has revealed that the truck initially brushed past a vehicle in Mukundpur, following which it was stopped by the car driver. To escape from the car driver’s wrath, Rajan reversed the vehicle, and hit the two schoolgirls and Umesh. Instead of stopping, Rajan fled towards Azadpur. However, the 34-year-old lost control over the vehicle at the Azadpur loop and the truck overturned. Rajan died on the spot, the police said.
Shikha and Khanchan were on their way home from school when the incident happened. Shikha, a student of Class 12 at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Nehru Vihar, was a resident of Mukundpur.
She was youngest among four siblings.
Her father is a salespersons and mother a homemaker.
Rajan, who belonged to Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, was employed by an east Delhi-based businessman.
“The injured persons were rushed to a hospital in Jahangirpuri, where Shikha and Rajan were declared brought dead. A case under IPC Sections 304 A [causing death by negligence] and 279 [rash driving] has been registered at Bhalswa Dairy police station,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Aslam Khan.
