Car smashes three people into Gabba shopfront after Big Bash opener

A driver hit three pedestrians and threw them through a glass shopfront outside the Gabba as cricket fans left the ground after the Big Bash season opener on Wednesday night.

The 35-year-old male driver and the pedestrians were all taken to hospital but escaped serious injury.

The crash, about 9.45pm on Stanley Street, happened about half an hour after the match finished and most of the crowd had already left the area.

Officers were yet to speak to the driver on Thursday morning, but blood had been taken at the hospital and investigators were waiting for the result of drug and alcohol testing.

Paramedics said it was a "close shave".

Queensland Ambulance Service medical director Dr Stephen Rashford said the pedestrians, two men aged 28 and 23 and a 28-year-old woman, suffered leg injuries from shattered glass and the impact of being hit by the car.

They were taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital.

"It was busy, but we were fortunate it wasn’t earlier when the majority of the crowd was leaving the Big Bash," Dr Rashford said.

"This was a very close shave for emergency services, who responded very quickly."
