Silent marches in IITs, NITs over fellowship hike
Manash Pratim Gohain | TNN | Dec 20, 2018, 05:47 ISTNEW DELHI: The nationwide movement by research scholars demanding revision of fellowship amounts is gaining momentum as hundreds of students from top central government run institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (Kanpur, BHU, Delhi, Mumbai), National Institute of Technology, Silchar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore decided to take out silent marches in their respective campuses demanding increase in their stipend on December 21.
In fact, IIT- Kanpur director has forwarded a petition signed by students to the ministry of human resource development for regular disbursement of scholarships and increase in scholarships for research scholars. In the petition to the MHRD signed by over 2,000 IIT-Kanpur students, the research scholars are demanding an increase in all current research fellowships and requesting the funding agencies to disburse the scholarships on regular short intervals.
The students are demanding inflation-based annual revision in stipend .
