MUMBAI: The police on Wednesday arrested Yuvraj Sandipan Sawant alias Patil (56), deputy development officer of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), in a Rs 2.5 crore housing scam.

Sawant is the fourth accused arrested in the scam where the suspects collected money from people promising flats under the executive quota, where they do not have to go through the lottery process. Sawant was produced before the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate, which remanded him in police custody till December 21.

The police had registered the case in 2014. Earlier, the police had arrested Sunita Tupsaundarya, Ramesha Chavan and Jitendra Gadia, against whom they had already filed the chargesheet before the sessions court.

On the delay in Sawant's arrest, the police said that fresh evidence gathered during the investigation had disclosed his role.
