The wife of disgraced 'sugar daddy' MP Andrew Broad has appeared publicly by his side as allegations of the man's misconduct begin to leak.

Broad, the MP for the regional Victorian seat of Mallee, set tongues wagging across the country after texts he exchanged with a 'sugar baby' known online as 'Sweet Sophia Rose' were leaked to New Idea this week.

As his constituents pored over details of his sordid encounter, from texts that tried to make 'g'day' a sexy term to details of the politician's penny-pinching ways and fondness for James Bond, Mr Broad's life appeared to crumble.

He resigned from his position as Assistant to the Deputy Prime Minister on Monday and announced he would not contest the May federal election on Tuesday, telling media he had let his constituency and his family down.

Despite his apparent failings, wife Rachel has stood by his side.

The pair were seen hand in hand on Monday, and a leaked email obtained by The Herald Sun reveals she played a role in his decision to quit politics.

In an email sent to members of the Nationals Mallee branch on Tuesday night, he said he'd decided not to re-contest the election during a conversation with his wife as they walked through Mildura that morning.

The 43-year-old said the scandal was not the only factor in their decision, with Broad also spending a lot of time away from home, leaving him unable to help his wife with their new foster child.

'We have had a year when I have been away too much, where extra responsibilities have been placed upon us with an additional foster child, and I made a grave error of judgement and allowed myself to be in a situation that is not appropriate,' Mr Broad wrote.

'Politics is a strange vocation, I have always said that I would try to speak common sense and not get a big head.'

While he and his wife arrived for lunch on Monday in separate cars, their relationship appeared to be on the mend, with Broad adding a cryptic message to his letter.

'It is humbling to be loved by others, even when they know your failings,' he wrote.

Andrew and Rachel Broad have been married for 19 years.

The conservative politician, who has often referred to his deep Christian faith during his time in Parliament, has been slammed for the apparent hypocrisy of his actions.

His 'sugar baby', who goes by Amy offline, told New Idea Broad sent her bold and explicit messages after they had finally agreed to meet for dinner.

In his dating profile, she alleges he told her he was 'an Aussie lad'. 'I know how to ride a horse, fly a plane and f--k my woman. My intentions are completely dishonourable,' he wrote.

Amy claims he told her he had 'booked a flashy room to seduce you back to' after dinner, despite the young woman stating on her profile there would be no physical intimacy between her and her clients.

New Idea report the pair met at the Aqua Restaurant in Hong Kong, where Mr Broad allegedly whinged about the price of a meal and bragged about his powerful position.

Amy said Mr Broad 'delivered his 'election speech' on the date, detailing why he should be voted in by the public.

'He kept saying he was very important and that when he left he would have to throw away his phone,' she told the magazine.

'He referred to himself as James Bond several times.'

In screenshots of what Amy claims are text messages sent between the pair, Mr Broad, a former farmer, appears happy to capitalise on his Australian upbringing.

After Amy tells him she thinks Australian accents are 'so sexy', he sends back what appears to be a sext.

'I pull you close, run my strong hands down your back, softly kiss your neck and whisper, 'G'day mate',' he writes.

After the bombshell revelations emerged, senior members of the Nationals told The Herald Sun the party knew of more of Mr Broad's indiscretions, which date back at least three years.

In the last 12 months alone, the Herald reports three separate women told the Nationals of Mr Broad's inappropriate conduct.

The women claimed they had seen Mr Broad acting out in hotels and bars and  threatened to out him in the media.

Mr Broad was one of the first Nationals MPs to publicly call for Barnaby Joyce's resignation as deputy prime minister after news emerged of his affair with his much younger former media adviser Vikki Campion.

He referenced the issue again in a tweet on February 22, quoting the late American evangelist Billy Graham.

'Quote from the late Billy Graham: 'When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost',' he wrote, adding these were: 'telling words for the leadership of the National Party'.

ANDREW BROAD RESIGNS: FULL STATEMENT

'Today I have informed the President of the Victorian Division of The Nationals that I am withdrawing my nomination to contest the Division of Mallee at the next Federal Election.

'After recent media stories about my private life, it is clear that the people of Mallee will be best served in the next Parliament by a different Nationals candidate.

'I want to acknowledge and thank my family, my staff, Nationals members and the community for their support of me.

'I have done my best and at times we have achieved good things, but I have also let them down.

'I have given 10 years of my life to serving regional Australia, first as the Vice President and President of the Victorian Farmers Federation and then as the Federal Member for Mallee.

'I hold a deep love for regional Australia.

'I am blessed to have represented the Mallee region of Victoria, and I am proud of what we have delivered together.

'I will continue to work tirelessly for my community as their local MP until the next election.'
