Taking cognisance of a letter written to the High Court Bench by the mother of a victim of sexual assault by a gang, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday initiated suo motu proceedings in the case.
A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and P.D. Audikesavalu took cognisance of the letter written by the woman hailing from Thanjavur. The court directed notice to Thanjavur police and adjourned the hearing.
The woman had said in the letter that the police had failed to take action against those involved in the crime as they were influential. The police were also shielding them on account of money power, she alleged, and sought a direction to the authorities concerned to conduct a proper, fair and impartial investigation in the case.
