MADURAI: A public interest litigation was filed in the Madurai bench of the Madras high court seeking the court’s direction to authorities to improve infrastructure facilities at Koodal Nagar railway station, which was declared by railways in 2016 as a potential satellite station for Madurai Railway Junction.
The PIL, filed by law student A V Saha, cited a newspaper report about lack of connecting bus facilities from the railway station. It stated that despite patronage from the public, the railway station lacked sufficient drinking water facilities.
Roads leading to the railway station were devoid of streetlights, it said.
The railway station is just over a kilometre away from a women’s college. Eight trains halt at the Koodal Nagar railway station and half that number stop there after 6pm and are used predominantly by people from the rural areas of Madurai district.
“The lack of functioning streetlights is a safety concern,” the petitioner stated and sought court’s intervention.
A division bench of Justice K K Sasidharan and Justice P D Audikesavalu admitted the petition.
