CHENNAI: After failing to get his driving licence renewed for more than two months, a 26-year-old lorry driver came up with an unconventional way of drawing the attention of the regional transport office (RTO) in Madurantakam.
On Monday, Mahendran, a lorry driver from Madurantakam, went to the RTO office along with a friend to meet the official to whom he had paid Rs 7,000 to get his licence renewed. He was seen with a clay vessel with the words ‘bribe to RTO’ in Tamil written on it. He started begging in front of the RTO, claiming that he was collecting bribe to pay the officials.
Soon, the RTO officials tried to reason with him and urged him to leave the place. Police from the Madurantakam station also approached him. The RTO officials said they didn’t receive his application.
Sakthivel, RTO of Madurantakam, said, “Mahendran had gone to a driving school for renewal of his licence. The driving school officials had demanded money using the RTO official’s names. We have issued statutory warning highlighting the mobile numbers of RTO officials so that they can be contacted if anyone is not satisfied with the service provided at the RTO office concerned.”
Officially, an individual has to pay Rs 500 for duplicate licence and Rs 350 for renewal. All applications have to be filed online and payment through Parivahan portal. The applicant should attach a copy of their payment page to the application form and submit the hard copy to the RTO office to process their request.
Mahendran claimed to have approached one Paramasivan, who runs a driving school and worked as an agent in the RTO office. Mahendran told the police that he paid Rs 7,000 Paramasivan two months back. As he didn’t get his licence, he couldn’t go to work. When he asked the driving school, they asked for more money.
Following which, he decided to stage a protest in front of the RTO. His application was processed on Monday, informed RTO officials.
Sources said, the RTO officials are collecting Rs 2,000 to Rs Rs5,000 depending on the queries as flag day fund from people.
