‘Narayanasamy holds such meetings when there is a virtual crisis’

The opposition AIADMK on Tuesday announced that it would boycott the all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Wednesday to discuss the situation arising out of the Supreme Court upholding the nomination of three members of BJP as nominated MLAs of the Puducherry Assembly.

Talking to reporters here, AIADMK Legislature party leader A. Anbalagan said that the all-party meeting would serve no purpose as Mr. Narayanasamy was holding such meetings whenever there was a virtual crisis for the Ministry to associate the cooperation of all political parties.

He said the apex court had also stated that the nominated legislators had voting rights in the Assembly.

The appointment of MLAs was taken before the court only by a Congress legislator and a DMK functionary.

No firm approach

Mr. Anbalagan said that the government had not adopted any firm approach on the issue. Basically, the Chief Minister was holding all-party meetings only when his government was facing difficult situations. While Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi was at constant loggerheads with the government, no such meeting was convened. Similarly, no meeting was convened to discuss the sad predicament of employees of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

Ms. Bedi has been interfering in the smooth functioning of the PSUs. But what was the government doing to protect the workers who have been going without wages for months together. Over 20,000 families have been affected due to non-disbursement of wages, he said.

The move of the government to file a review petition in the wake of the apex court verdict upholding the nomination of the three MLAs would also meet with failure since the review petition would also go to the same bench that had given the verdict validating the nomination of the MLAs.

Hence, no purpose would be served by the all-party meeting convened on Wednesday.

The government had not done anything to mitigate the sufferings of the cyclone-affected people in Yanam region. No compensation had been announced so far to mitigate the sufferings of the fishermen in cyclone-ravaged Karaikal too, he said.
