A day after the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Thoppur in Madurai district at a cost of ₹1,264 crore, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and assured that the State government would extend all necessary support.
“On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu and on my personal behalf, I thank you for approving the establishment of a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Thoppur in Madurai district at a cost of ₹1,264 crore,” Mr. Palaniswami said in his letter to the PM, a copy of which was released to the media.
Prestigious institution
Mr. Palaniswami also recalled that former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was keen that such a prestigious institution be established and made functional in Tamil Nadu.
“The Cabinet decision and financial approval accorded yesterday [Monday] has taken the project to the next stage, and my government will provide all necessary support to facilitate the early commencement and completion of the project so that the long-cherished dream of my revered leader [Jayalalithaa] is realised,” the Chief Minister added.
