Looking for long-term solutions is the ideal way to handle problems, B. Gayathri Krishnan, Sub-Collector of Pollachi, said on Monday while addressing over 600 students at the Future India programme organised by The Hindu and KPR IAS Academy at the Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College in Pollachi.

Stating that being an IAS officer was not just about power and authority, she told students to be responsible individuals if they wished to see a change in society.

Recalling a situation during the widening of the Coimbatore - Pollachi highway, which required the cutting of many trees, Ms. Krishnan said her interaction with nature enthusiasts, industrialists and local groups resulted in the relocation of the trees and . “Connecting with people, who have knowledge about the issue, is more important than using one’s authority to go for quick solution,” she said.

The Hindu and KPR IAS academy has been organising Future India programmes for college students to bring out civil services officers from Coimbatore region.

Managing director of KPR, K.P.D Sigamani said he was unsuccessful in his attempts to become an IAS officer and added that he was determined to provide facilities for the younger generation who aspired to become civil services officers.
