3 killed in four accidents in Kolkata and districts

KOLKATA/KOLAGHAT: Three people, including an army jawan, were killed and three critically injured in four different accidents in the city and districts. While one of the fatalaties happened in Kolkata’s Mominpore, two other accidents happened in Barrackpore, North 24 Parganas and East Midnapore’s Kolaghat.

In Kolkata, 65-year-old Kalpana Porel of Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas was crossing the road at the junction of Diamond Harbour Road and Judge Court Road around 7.30am on Tuesday when a bus on SD-8 route ran over her. Kalpana sustained multiple injuries and was taken to a private hospital in the Ekbalpore area where she succumbed to her injuries 10am. The bus driver was arrested.


Later in the day, a rickshaw-puller identified as Alimuddin Purkait, who lives in Ultadanga, was critically injured when a bus on route 211 hit his cycle rickshaw near Khanna crossing. The accident happened around 9 am.


In the third accident, a 35-year-old army jawan, Ranjit Gupta, was killed after being hit by an SUV in Barrackpore around 9.30pm on Monday. Gupta, a resident of Bareilly in UP, was posted at Barrackpore Cantonment Army Camp. He was on his way to the camp on his scooter when the accident occurred.


The fourth accident took place at Kolaghat where Madhusudan Gantait (50) was killed while his wife, daughter and driver were injured when the private car carrying them from Kolkata airport to their Midnapore home hit a stationary truck on Nh-6 around 1.30 am on Tuesday. Madhusudan and his wife went to the airport to pick up their daughter.
