Government Taking Steps to Avoid Partial Shutdown

The government is taking steps to avoid a partial shutdown on Friday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced a  short-term funding extension  on Wednesday to keep the government running through Feb.

8.

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats would support the deal.

And the White House has indicated that it might also be willing to support the measure.  Border wall funding has been a major sticking point between lawmakers and President Donald Trump.

But on Tuesday, the Trump administration appeared to back off its hard line demand for wall funding.

Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the White House is looking at other sources for that money.  If the Senate passes this spending legislation, it'll head to the House for a vote.

If it passes there, it's on to the president's desk for the final stamp of approval.
