MUMBAI: Hand-held terminals will soon be introduced on the Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani Express making it possible to allot vacant berths to waitlisted passengers even after the journey has commenced.
A senior WR official said, “This is the first time on WR that HHT terminals will made available in the train. HHTs will help allot vacant berths to RAC and wait- listed passengers and can be used to send updated information about occupancy of seats/berths to the server.”
A hand-held terminal (HHT) is an electronic device similar to tablets through which the TTE (train ticket examiner) can upload availability of seats. Usually, if the TTE finds a passenger has not boarded the train, he marks it in the chart. With the HHT, he will be able to upload it in the system.
Passengers with a waitlisted ticket will get a message on their registered mobile number if a vacant seat is allotted to them.
Currently, TTEs maintain a record of berth availability by checking tickets manually. HHTs will eliminate the need to carry the chart as all entries will have to be recorded in the device.
The official said, “Not only we will be able to save paper, but, more importantly, berth availability status will made available to waitlisted passengers in the running train. This will bring more transparency and also ensure TTEs do not allot vacant berths on their own discretion.”
