Surat: Gold powder worth Rs 1.2 crore stolen from jewellery unit

Surat: Police booked some unidentified person in Katargam police station area on Tuesday for allegedly stealing gold worth Rs 1.20 crore from a jewellery manufacturing unit in Nandu Doshi Ni Wadi locality of Katargam area. The accused stole 3.8 kg gold powder from the unit which is located in the area that houses several diamonds and jewellery manufacturing units.

Burglars targeted the unit during early hours on Tuesday and escaped with the valuables. The complaint was lodged by Sachin Bhamre, an employee of Kiran Jewels India. The burgled jewellery unit operates from Diamond Mansion building. The valuables were stolen from ground floor of the building.


Police recovered CCTV footages from the unit in which a man with covered face stole the gold powder stored in containers. The man is seen using multiple plastic bags to store the gold. Police are examining CCTV footages of neighbouring areas to trace the accused.


Police investigation revealed that the burglar entered in the unit breaking iron grill of exhaust fan window. Later he broke the iron door of the particular room to reach the gold. Refinery section of the unit was targeted. In the refinery section the unit produces pure gold after melting waste gold powder recovered from different jewellery making sections of the unit.
