15:26(IST)

STUMPS: In a day that clearly belonged to the Aussies, they are just five wickets away from a win, and make it 1-1 in the series. As for India a win is 175 runs away.

15:22(IST)

We are perhaps into the last over of the day. Pant and Vihari have taken India to 112/5. The target is out of reach for the Indians, but Test cricket is all about battling.

15:11(IST)

This match has already slipped out of India's hands. It's just a matter of getting the remaining wickets for the Aussies. India are 106/5.

14:59(IST)

OUT: Rahane has thrown his wicket away to Hazlewood. He tries to drive the ball over the point fielders head, but instead ends up giving a simple catch. He departs for 30. India are 98/5.

14:51(IST)
14:46(IST)

Slowly and gradually India have moved to 97/4. They still need 190 runs to win, which is quite some distance away for now, but Indian batsmen will have grind it out in the middle to reach there.

14:34(IST)

With 12 overs to go in the day India should set a target of not losing another wicket and taking the score to 120. If that happens India can still harbour hopes of winning the match. It's 86/4.

14:25(IST)

Vihari and Rahane are hanging on there at the moment.  But such is this pitch, you never know where a wicket is coming from. India are 77/4.

14:18(IST)

Vihari sweeps Lyon and gets a four through midwicket. India should look to not lose a wicket till the end of days play. The score reads 71/4.

14:09(IST)
14:04(IST)

Rahane responds with a six after the departure of Vijay, but India are in deep trouble. Hopefully India doesn't lose any more wickets till the end of play today. It's 62/4.

13:58(IST)

FOUR DOWN: Nathan Lyon turns the ball a mile and Vijay is castled. What a brilliant ball by the off-spinner. India lose fourth. Looks like India is going down  today.

13:55(IST)

Rahane starts off with a slashing drive through point. He starts off with a four. That's the kind of way India needs to go about chasing this target. It's 54/3.

13:46(IST)

OUT: Yet another over comes to an end and India are looking steady at the moment. And out of nowhere India has lost Kohli. Lyon gets the ball to turn a bit and Kohli pokes at it. He is caught at first slip as India lose third. It's 48/3.

13:38(IST)
13:34(IST)

India have been patient after the fall of two early wickets and that is the way to deal with this dangerous pitch. Time is not an issue for India as they have good hundred overs to achieve the target.

13:26(IST)

Nathan Lyon has come into the attack now, he will be looking to extract bounce from the pitch. There are some footmarks on the pitch and India certainly cannot afford to take him easy!

13:17(IST)

Kohli and Vijay looking solid at the moment, key for India will be to build partnerships on this pitch and take it session by session. Currently, they are 37/2 and require 250 more runs to win this game!

13:15(IST)

India are slowly scoring their runs, but that is not important at the moment. The key for India here is that they should not lose any more wickets now. India are 33/2.

13:10(IST)
13:01(IST)

Kohli is trying to remain positive here as he pulls Rahul for a four. India is going to need a lot more of those. India are 22/2.

12:57(IST)

All lies in Kohli's hands to put up a fight against the Aussie bowling line up. This is not looking good for the Indians as it's 18/2.

12:41(IST)
12:34(IST)

TEA: What a gripping session of play this was. Australia are the favourites to win from here as India are 15/2 at the moment and still need 272 runs.

12:23(IST)

OUT: Another one down for India as a length ball from Hazlewood rises and takes an edge off Pujara's bat. India are in deep trouble at 13/2.

12:18(IST)

A length ball from Starc just hits the crack and goes for four byes. Vijay follows it up with a spanking drive through point. He needs to be positive here if India are to fancy any chances of winning. India are 9/1.

12:10(IST)

What a first over from Starc. India are 0/1 at the end of it.

12:08(IST)

OUT! Mitchell Starc dismisses Rahul with a peach of a delivery. The ball pitches on the good length area but clips the top of his off stump, coming back in sharply. India are 0/1, and it's a perfect start for the hosts.

12:06(IST)

The start of the Indian innings sees Mitchell Starc steaming in to bowl to KL Rahul, who will be crucial to India's cause in chasing down this target of 287.

Day 3 report: Nathan Lyon's five-wicket haul and Usman Khawaja's resistance with the bat ensured Australia stayed on top in the second Test in Perth despite a century by Virat Kohli. At stumps, Australia were 132 for 4 with a lead of 175. Khawaja was unbeaten on 41 with Tim Paine (8) for company. India were earlier bowled out for 283, with Kohli top-scoring with 123 and Lyon returning 5 for 67. The lead was healthy given the wear and tear on the pitch. The only way India could have fought back was through wickets; India should have had a wicket in the fifth over but Cheteshwar Pujara dropped a marginally tough catch at first slip to hand Marcus Harris a reprieve when he was batting on just one. At the other end, Aaron Finch rubbed salt on India's wounds and stretched Australia's lead with a few boundaries.

The partnership, which had added 112 in the first innings, crossed 30 before India got a bit of fortune in the form of Finch's injury. The opener was hit on his right index finger by a rising Mohammed Shami delivery at the stroke of tea. Retired hurt, Finch was taken to the hospital for scans. India stepped up the intensity in the final session, with Jasprit Bumrah going through a superb spell and Shami supporting him well. Bumrah was quick, accurate and even menacing, having the batsmen dancing to his tunes. It ultimately resulted in Harris' wicket, the batsman leaving one that angled in to clip top of off-stump. Shami soon had Shaun Marsh nicking to the keeper while trying to pull. Peter Handscomb tried to negate India's attack with a few shots, but the arrival of Ishant Sharma ended his stay for 13 off 14. Knowing Handscomb stands deep in his crease, Ishant bowled a full in-swinger which the batsman missed completely to be given out LBW.

At 85 for 3, with uncertainty surrounding Finch's availability, India sniffed a chance. They were high on intensity, but the good work of Bumrah, Ishant and Shami was not backed up by Umesh Yadav. In times when India needed all their guns blazing, Umesh was inconsistent with line and length, and thus expensive; his first seven overs cost 38 runs. It frustrated India, allowed Usman Khawaja to settle in, and helped Australia extend their lead. It also forced Kohli to bowl Hanuma Vihari, who held up one end by bowling wide outside off to the left-handed Khawaja and Travis Head. The two added 35 for the fourth wicket before Head threw it away, slashing Shami to third man in a replica of his first-innings dismissal. India could have had Khawaja before stumps too, but Rahane missed a tough chance at slip off Vihari. The game was in the balance when the day started with India on 172/3. They had two set batsmen in Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, but Lyon had the latter caught behind in the fourth ball of the day. Kohli crossed his century and added 50 for the fifth wicket with Vihari. The Indian captain fell edging Pat Cummins to second slip, where Handscomb took a low catch. Kohli stood his ground, but the third umpire didn't find much evidence to overrule the on-field soft signal. Lyon then took care of the long Indian lower-order, ensuring Australia a handy lead.
