The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was triggered from a spark generated from a cigarette butt. Three cylinders burst, spreading the blaze. Around 300 vendors in the market sell vegetables, fruits, groceries, clothes, shoes and food items.
The illegal market is right next to showrooms, posing a major threat to them. Mohali police said due to the fire and rescue operation, the Chandigarh-Ambala highway was blocked, causing a traffic jam on the Chandigarh and Panchkula side.
Officials of the municipal council along with area councillors and police officers rushed to the spot.
