It is not Hindi, but its imposition that we are opposing, says KDA chief

Mysuru: Clarifying his position on the study of Hindi, chairman of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) SG Siddaramaiah on Monday said, “We do not oppose Hindi as a language. What we are resisting is its imposition. The people of Karnataka love all languages, and live in harmony with those whose mother tongues are different.”
Siddaramaiah, who was in attendance at the valedictory of Kannada Habba-2018 organised by the Kannada Sahrudaya Balaga of CFTRI, said that Karnataka was one of the few states in the country to have adopted both bilingual and trilingual systems in education and administration. “While Kannada and English for internal administration, whereas Hindi is used in central organisations. Hindi is always an option in our state. Even the Constitution makes it clear that Hindi is not our national language, but few Members of Parliament are creating an issue out of it. MPs, who swear to uphold the Constitution, must first study it properly,” Siddaramaiah said.
Seeking to highlight the neglect of regional languages by the banking sector, Siddaramaiah pointed to the decision taken by officials concerned at the financial institutions to hold their examinations only in Hindi and English in 2014. “Less than 10% of Kannada-speaking candidates who appeared for the test were selected. Villagers in rural areas will find dealing with banks hard owing to the imposition of Hindi. They cannot impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu. Then, why are they trying to do so in Karnataka? Has Karnataka become a laboratory to conduct these experiments?”
The KDA chief said that the presence of a cultural forum in organisations would avert clashes. “Where there is art, there will be no acrimony. Every organisation must have a cultural troupe, and if any government authority tries to disrupt it, such acts must be condemnded,” Siddaramaiah added.
Certificates were handed out to CFTRI workers who participated in the organisation’s Kannada learning workshop, which was held for the fifth time. A musical performance by noted vocalist Nithin Rajaram Shetty and his troupe was held as part of the occasion.
CFTRI director KSMS Raghava Rao, president of the Kannada Sahrudaya Balaga Rangadhamaiah, vice-president K Venkateshamurthy and R Chetana were present.
