Motorcyclist injured after fire truck causes traffic chaos in Mundaring
A motorcyclist has had a lucky escape after a fire truck on its way to an emergency caused some peak-hour traffic chaos in Mundaring on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident took place on Great Eastern Highway just before 4pm at the intersection of Old York Road when the truck, which was forced on to the median strip to pass traffic, moved slightly on to the other side of the busy road.
"There was a large fire truck that was trying to come up Great Eastern Highway towards Mundaring but the traffic was blocked so he went on the median strip," a witness told WAtoday.
"Then the median strip narrowed so he went half into the lane of oncoming traffic.
"Unfortunately because he was trying to get to the fire on the left, he musn't have realised the bend in the road — oncoming traffic couldn't see him in time so they've ended up having to lock their brakes and a motorbike rider ... went flying into the air."
Prior to the incident, the witness said traffic eastbound along the highway had been slow because of the fire, but traffic headed westbound was flowing normally.
The motorcyclist, believed to be a man in his 40s, was treated by the firefighting crew at the scene before paramedics arrived.
His condition is not yet known, but it is believed he was conscious at the scene.
Traffic eastbound on the Great Eastern Highway was closed but reopened at 4.30pm.
