North Malabar, south Karnataka expected to benefit

The proposed cargo complex being constructed at the Kannur International Airport here will be completed and ready for operations within a year, according to Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL) authorities.

The cargo complex, which is expected to open up new avenues for farmers and the business community in the north Malabar region and south Karnataka, will facilitate exports in agricultural and non-agricultural products from these regions, a press note from KIAL said on Tuesday.

The 8,329-sq-m cargo complex comprises a dedicated perishable cargo zone, international general cargo export zone, international general cargo import zone, domestic export, domestic import, and office spaces. A gatehouse of 631 sq m with a visitors’ area, security check, drivers’ rest room, and offices are also there.

Traffic projection

The cargo traffic projection in 2027 has been taken into account for the construction of the complex. It is estimated that the cargo traffic through the Kannur airport will be 37,239 tonnes by 2025. A service provider for the cargo complex will be selected by KIAL later. An exclusive Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for cargo is also being considered. The complex is being constructed with modular expansion facilities to take care of future needs.

The airport and cargo complex are expected to give a further boost to the textile sector in Kannur. The cargo facility will also benefit Kodagu in Karnataka, known for floriculture.
