Is this proof big cats are roaming Australia? Backpacker makes another sighting of a large black panther - as it's revealed one has been seen EVERY DAY for the last two years

  • An infamous black cat has been spotted by a backpacker in Queensland
  • The sighting follows a string of similar apparent appearances in the rural area
  • Research says one black cat is reportedly seen every day in Australia

An infamous black cat has been spotted by a bewildered backpacker, as it's revealed one of the mythical species is seen every day in Australia.

The sighting took place near Gympie, 160 kilometres north of Brisbane, following a string of similar appearances in the area.

Backpacker Rhys Lipton spotted the animal from the safety of a car when he noticed 'something black in the grass on the hill'.

Mr Lipton recounted the run-in to the Gympie Times, claiming the animal appeared to be 'lying down (and) eating'.

'I joked to my friend and said there's a panther, and she laughed and said there isn't any panthers in Australia and then it lifted its head up and I was like "oh my god I don't know if it's a panther or a big black cat",' he said.

Mr Lipton became sure of his discovery after he used a Google search to compare what he'd apparently seen to another, infamously unconfirmed black cat.

'It was only then that I knew I was correct and I had seen the black panther,' he recalls.

Mr Lipton did not take any photos of the sighting.

But it's not the first time a similar kind of creature has been spotted in the rural area.

Earlier this year, another man who took images of a small, black cat roaming in bushland near Gympie was convinced it was a black panther.

The creature, with thick hind legs and a muscular back, resembled a feline animal native to parts of southern Asia.

According to research, which involves evidence-gathering techniques including motion-activated camera traps and thermal drones, one big cat has been reported every day in Australia over the past two years.
