CHENNAI: A 23-year-old man was charred to death after the minivan he was driving went up in flames at Pappanchathiram on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway on Saturday night.
Police said attempts by passersby to rescue Adikesavan G, of Otteri, went in vain as the fire which started in the rear end of the goods carrier spread across its length rapidly.
The onlookers alerted police and called the fire and rescue services control room at 101. On reaching the spot, a police patrol team tried to put out the fire by pouring some water and sand and tried to pull Adikesavan out, but was unsuccessful.
Personnel from the Nasarethpet police station recovered Adikesavan’s body and sent it to Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital for postmortem. Police said Adikesavan was a bachelor and lived with his parents in Otteri. They informed his family and the vehicle’s owner about the incident.
Forensic experts were pressed into service to examine the gutted vehicle. Samples collected will be sent for motor vehicle inspection to find out if fire was caused due to a mechanical glitch, police said.
Police are awaiting the postmortem report to probe the case further. Adikesavan had joined as driver with the current employer only three months ago. Police personnel are also looking into what had prevented Adikesavan from stepping out of the vehicle when it was burning.
