The Telangana police on Monday told a division bench of the Hyderabad High Court that it took Congress leader A. Revanth Reddy into preventive detention on December 4 during the recent Assembly election to ensure no law and order problem arises.

In an affidavit filed before the bench comprising Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice M. Satyanarayana Murthy, the then Vikarabad Superintendent of Police K. Annapurna stated that Mr. Reddy declined to withdraw his call to disrupt Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s meeting in Kodangal. Hence, there was no option but to detain him, she stated.

It may be recalled that State police chief M. Mahender Reddy personally appeared before the bench after it sought to know reasons behind the Congress leader’s detention. The bench instructed the Advocate General to file a counter affidavit by December 12 then.

Mr. Reddy’s counsel sought time to respond over the counter affidavit. The matter was posted for next hearing to December 20.
