THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ponmudi, one of the most preferred tourism destinations in the district, will get additional 15 rooms, including five independent cottages with stunning views of the panoramic mountains and cliffs.
Tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran will inaugurate the new facilities at a function to be attended by MP A Sampath, MLA D K Murali and KTDC chairman M Vijayakumar.

The additional rooms have been established at the Golden Peak Resort, a budget hill resort of Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) which already have 14 rooms. With this upgradation, the resort will now have a total of 29 rooms, which include seven deluxe rooms, 15 premium rooms, two suites, five cliff-view rooms and one superior suite (with two-bedrooms). The cliff-view rooms are independent cottages with stunning views of the cliff.

Though a favourite destination for domestic tourists, Ponmudi, unlike Kovalam, had been enjoying a comparatively low footfall of foreigners in the past. But, with the announcement of new rooms, the KTDC resort has already received a major booking for a group of tourists from Germany, said the official.

Scattered on the misty terrain, which is around 915 feet above the sea level, a majority of the rooms including premium cottages are a blend of wood and granite. The occupancy is almost 100% during weekends and holidays, and the rush is during summer vacation (April-May) and during Onam and other festivals.

The old property of the resort, which was functioning as a guest house under the state tourism department, was handed over to the KTDC for upgrading as a resort. It was in 2010 that KTDC launched the Golden Peak Resort at Ponmudi. Now, the plans are to upgrade the old rooms as well to suit the new look the property has attained, the official said.
