Live Now : Toss won by Australia (decided to bat)

Highlights

15:23(IST)

And stumps has been called. Australia end the day at 132/4. India struck late in the day to get rid of Handscomb but the wickets of Paine and Khawaja will be key, not to mention that getting rid of a tail that can wag will be another issue in itself. Australia are definitely in a good position going into Day 4 but India know they can still turn things around.

15:11(IST)

Khawaja slashes at a slightly wide ball from Vihari and the ball grazes Rahane's hand at first slip then runs away to the boundary. In all fairness, that catch was near-impossible to hold onto. Australia 130/4 with 5 overs remaining.

15:06(IST)

The day is drawing to a close and India will no doubt be looking for another wicket. Mind, Australia are still not in a good position because of what happened to Finch.

14:54(IST)
14:50(IST)

OUT! What a way to throw away your wicket! Shami bowls it short and wide, prompting Head to slash at it but he only finds Ishant Sharma at deep third man. India have the breakthrough they were so desperately seeking. Australia are 120/4 now.

14:47(IST)

Bumrah is generating consistent pace and getting some wicked swing, with Pant having to dive wildly to his left to catch hold of one that swung about five yards after missing the batsman. This has been an enthralling battle to watch thus far.

14:40(IST)

Both Vihari and Bumrah are ramping up the heat now but both Head and Khawaja are holding steady as of now. India will hope a breakthrough comes soon because they are not doing much wrong at this point.

14:38(IST)
14:33(IST)

Vihari's off-spin has stemmed the flow of runs but his line isn't attacking enough to induce any threats from the Aussie batsmen. Kohli's obviously desperate for a wicket as he brings back Bumrah into the attack. He troubles Head but the batsman manages to see out the over. Australia are 110/3.

14:27(IST)

Australia's lead crosses the 150-run mark and India will be a bit nervous now. Another wicket or two before the end of the day would be what they are looking for, at the very least.

14:21(IST)

A couple of quiet overs here after the drinks break here, the Australian lead slowly crawling to 150 here. India might look at Hanuma Vihari bowling a couple of overs here, just to give the quick bowlers a rest

14:15(IST)
14:08(IST)

It's time for drinks here, as we enter the final hour of play here. India might look to give Jasprit Bumrah another run in here and look for a couple of wickets before stumps. Australia ahead at this stage you have to say!

14:04(IST)

After that early steam, Indian pacers seem to be losing their fizz here. Umesh Yadav is a bit erratic at the moment and seems to be straying in his line & length. Its important for India to keep up the pressure here

13:56(IST)

Travis Head is the new batsman out here, if India can manage to get another couple of wickets here, then we will surely have a game on our hands. The aim should be to keep the lead below 250 here. It is currently at 132!

13:50(IST)

WICKET! Ishant Sharma strikes immediately, Handscomb's disastrous technique finally lets him down. He stays back in the crease, and he is so far behind that despite coming on the front-foot, he is still inside the crease. The ball swings back and hits the pads. He is a dead duck there, Ishant rejoices and Australia are 85/3

13:48(IST)

Umesh Yadav comes into the attack and starts with a really ordinary over here, Handscomb is more than happy to stay on the backfoot, still Umesh persists with the short ball and it is hammered for a boundary.

13:45(IST)

Bumrah with another top notch over, almost too good for the batsman to nick. He keeps on beating the bat but still no edge. Australia will take that. Some fiery old-school Test cricket here

13:39(IST)

Another outside edge and the ball flies away to the boundary, India might well consider a flying slip here considering the number of outside edges that are flying over the slip cordon here! Australia move to 74/2 after 23 overs

13:34(IST) Kohli cam in action!
13:28(IST)

WICKET! India's fast bowling reaps rewards, Marsh departs and Shami strikes. Its a short ball and Marsh looks to pull but gets the underedge, straight through to Pant. Kohli is absolutely pumped yet again (we have written that quite a few times!)/ Marsh departs for 5 and Australia are 64/2

13:25(IST)

Shane Warne on Twitter: Terrific bowling by the Indian quicks on this pitch. High class & fascinating test cricket. There’s nothing like watching the drama unfold of a test match. Aust ahead, but if India stay patient they could get 3 quick ones here - they need them as 250+ will be very hard to chase

13:24(IST)

BOOM. Bumrah certainly clocking up the miles here, has been consistently above 140 kph and now he hits Khawaja in the groin area. He seems to be in pain here but Kohli is certainly enjoying it.

13:18(IST)
13:15(IST)

STAT ATTACK: Marcus Harris dismissed bowled for 20 by Bumrah

1st bowled dismissal for Harris in Tests.
6th consecutive wicket for Bumrah with the batters score of 20 or above.

13:11(IST)

WICKET! Bumrah strikes, he is the only one looked like getting a wicket here and delivers. In-swinger from Bumrah and Harris looks to leave it but the ball kisses the off-stump. Harris departs for 20 and Kohli is absolutely pumped. Australia are 59/1

13:06(IST)

Again, two boundaries from the Umesh Yadav over there. India really letting the game slip here as Australia take control. The visitors have looked a bit lackluster here and seem to be really struggling at the moment

12:58(IST)

FOUR! Fine square drive from Harris helps him pick a boundary there. Too much width on offer there and the Aussie opener makes full use of it. Australia certainly look good at the moment, the lead quickly

12:53(IST)

Fiery over from Mohammad Shami after tea here, testing Khawaja with the short ball. The pitch certainly has some spice in it and it will be a testing period for the batsmen. India will need some quick wickets here.

Day 2 report: Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane scored unbeaten half-centuries to leave the second Test against Australia in Perth tantalisingly poised at the end of the second day.

India were 172 for 3, trailing Australia by 154 runs with Kohli on 82 and Rahane on 51. India had earlier bowled out Australia for 326 in the morning session, with Ishant bagging four wickets. Batting in the fourth innings isn't going to get any easier, making India's first innings all the more important. They needed a good start, but got anything but it as they lost both openers with just eight on board. M Vijay missed an in-swinger from Mitchell Starc and fell for a duck, once again pushing at a delivery he should have been defending. KL Rahul then played all over a beauty of a Josh Hazlewood yorker soon after lunch. At 8 for 2, India needed either a counter-attack or a stubborn resistance. They got a bit of both in the form of Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. Kohli got off the blocks quickly, driving Hazlewood for three fours in an over. Pujara was being Pujara, just defending and dead-batting and leaving alone balls in old-fashioned manner. Kohli raced to 18 off 10, but he slowed down with the arrival of Nathan Lyon. The off-spinner was as tight as he could be, and choked the run flow. It allowed the pacers to attack relentlessly from the other end. India scored only 23 runs in a 20-over period at one stage. They didn't hit a boundary for 22 straight overs.

Kohli did chase a few balls outside off, but fortunately for India, didn't edge. Apart from the odd flashy shots, he and Pujara were largely solid and took India to tea without any further damage. Pujara fell in a rather soft manner post tea when he gloved Mitchell Starc down leg-side to wicketkeeper Tim Paine after a 103-ball 24. The 74-run partnership had been broken after 33 overs, but India were still in a spot of bother at 82 for 3. The arrival of Rahane changed the momentum a little and gave the innings an impetus. He took on the bowling almost immediately, pulling and upper-cutting the pacers for boundaries. Rahane also slashed Starc over the third man boundary for six, but was also fortunate to not edge a few wild slashes away from his body.

Rahane's first 22 balls produced 23 runs, and then he settled down. Moving on to the second stage of his innings, he was a bit more cautious but kept the runs coming with the odd boundary. It allowed Kohli to be a bit more brisk too, the Indian captain getting past his half-century slashing Cummins for a boundary. Rahane moved through his 40s to the 50-run mark with two beautiful shots off Hazlewood. He first played a lovely straight drive which forced Hazlewood to go short. Once the bowler did that, he upper-cut to the third man fence. The vice-captain and captain stayed on till the end - just what India would have wanted given they have a long tail. Earlier, Australia stretched their score from 277 for 6 to 326 with Paine and Cummins gradually increasing India's frustration. The duo batted out the first hour without damage, while India for some reason didn't start with Jasprit Bumrah, the best bowler on the first day. With the score on 310, Umesh Yadav finally broke the 69-run stand with a peach of a delivery that bowled Cummins. Bumrah trapped Paine lbw two balls later, after which Ishant Sharma got the last two wickets to end with a four-wicket haul.
