2019 VW California Is Too Expensive If You’re Not A Camper Enthusiast

The VW California is one of the most likeable camper vans available in the market today, with the German company honoring their long tradition in the segment with a very cleverly packaged vehicle that retains the shape of the van it’s based on.

This makes the California easier to drive and park than a motorhome while still being able to sleep four people. In fact, it’s as easy to drive as a normal VW van as it retains the same exact footprint on the road.

The cabin offers a wide range of configurations and includes a kitchen top with a double gas stove, useful cabinets and a small sink, a cool box, a rear bench that turns into a double bed, reversible front seats and a second double bed, thanks to the pop-up roof. The only things missing are a shower and a toilet.

Based on thelatest, T6 generation of VW’s popular van, the California is offered with the same diesel powertrains, with outputs ranging from 85PS (83hp) to 204PS (201hp) for the range-topping twin-turbo 2.0-liter TDI version that’s been reviewed here.

However, it all comes at a very steep price. With all the extras counted in, the test car came with the eye-watering price of £65,000 ($82,000 in current exchange rates). Sure the California campers hold their value really well, but still, that’s a lot of money.
