Two dead after car veers off freeway ramp into water in Melbourne's west

The brother of a man who died after his car veered off a freeway ramp overnight has described him as a hard worker who would "do anything for anyone".

The man, who declined to give his name, said the 27-year-old was a "loving brother" who had just bought a house with his girlfriend in Hoppers Crossing.

"He had a girlfriend, they were in love ... they just got back from Thailand a few days before," he said.

The man was one of two killed when their car swerved off a freeway ramp into water in Melbourne's west on Saturday night.

It is understood their car was travelling southbound on the Western Ring Road, near the Geelong-bound Princes Freeway off-ramp, when it became airborne and crashed about 8.45pm.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler said the car, a white Mercedes, was submerged in water. The men have not been formally identified.

"It is understood the car was travelling southbound along the freeway at Altona North when it went ... into water," she said.

Officers from the search and rescue squad found the bodies of two men after the car was pulled from the water.

A Victoria Police spokesman said police would investigate speed as a factor in the crash.

The car hit a road sign on its way down, moving the sign about 40 metres from the road.

Broken reeds showed the pathway of the vehicle on Sunday morning.

A tow truck being used to move the white Mercedes became bogged. Truck drivers were still working to move the vehicle about 10am.

Earlier Saturday night, two people were taken to hospital after their car rolled at Bunyip, about 80 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

Police say the car was travelling in Nar Nar Goon-Longwarry Road shortly after 6.30pm when the female driver lost control.

She and her male passenger were trapped after their car struck a power pole and rolled.

They suffered non-life threatening injuries.
