CHAMARAJANAGAR: While police are yet to unravel the mystery behind Friday’s food poisoning that killed 11 people at Kichgutth.
Maramma temple in Sulwadi village in Kollegal, the Chamarajanagar district health officer (DHO) said on Saturday that “a large quantity of toxin has gone into the food” that was served to devotees.
DHO Dr K H Prasad made the observation after analysing poisoning symptoms of the victims. He also said that food samples have been sent for forensic tests and results would take at least two to three days since the toxin was mixed with food.
Chamarajanagar police have formed three special teams, headed by Kollegal sub division DSP Puttamadaiah, to probe the incident. Police, after detaining a few, are questioning temple committee representatives and villagers.
A total of 104 people have taken ill after consuming the prasadam (offering). According to district health officials, 93 are undergoing treatment in eight hospitals in the city and 29 of them are in critical condition.
Santhosh and Lokesh, sons of Maartalli GP member Chinnappi who went voluntarily to the police station and was detained, suspect that those who wanted to wrest control of the 200-year-old temple are behind the “sabotage”. Their father has been the caretaker of the temple for the last two decades. They, however, are clueless about the miscreants. Santhosh alleged that police are suspecting his father because he had food at home on Friday.
The duo also suspects that the poison was mixed in after food was prepared since cauldrons were left unattended.
