Here are the major takeaways from the third day of Ranji Trophy round six.
Shubman Gill 268 lights up Punjab
Unbeaten overnight on 199, Gill notched up his maiden first-class double century against Tamil Nadu as Punjab gained control of their sixth round game against Tamil Nadu at IS Bindra Cricket Stadium, in Mohali. Gill stood head and shoulders above his teammates which included India internationals Mandeep Singh (50), Yuvraj Singh (41) and Gurkeerat Mann (48). The 19-year-old slammed 268 in just 328 deliveries, his innings studded with 29 fours and four sixes as Punjab finished on 479 taking a hefty lead of 274 runs.
Yuvraj then rattled Tami Nadu picking up two wickets in two balls before Abhinav Mukund and Baba Indrajith staged a fightback. At close on day 3, Tamil Nadu still trailed Punjab by 98 runs with 7 wickets in the hut.
Jalaj Saxena stars yet again as Kerala humble Delhi
Having been pushed to the brink at the end of day 2, Delhi collapsed in a heap on Friday losing their sixth round game by an innings and 27 runs to Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram. Saxena was once again the architect of the win finishing with a match haul of 9/98 to go with a 68 in Kerala's first innings.
Resuming on 41/5, Saxena picked up Anuj Rawat (31) and Dhruv Shorey (17) in quick succession to leave Delhi limping on 83/7. Shivam Sharma (33) and Subodh Bhati (30) provided some resistance, but it proved to be futile in the end as following on they were bowled out for 154 in 41 overs.
In the other Group B encounter, Andhra staged a good fightback in their second innings but were still firmly on the back foot against Himachal Pradesh. Resuming on 371/6, some useful lower order runs by Mayank Dagar (41) and Prakash Jaiswal (32 in 11) helped HP to 460 and attain a 287-run lead. At stumps on day 3, Andhra were on 175/1 still 112 runs in the arrears. Opener CR Gnaneshwar was unbeaten on 89 along with Jyothisaikrishna (16*).
Mumbai, Baroda primed for thrilling finish
The Group A encounter between Baroda and Mumbai was in for a tantalising finish after Mumbai managed to take a slender 29-run lead in. But Baroda hit back in the final stages of the day picking up two quick wickets at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Resuming at 244/1, Aditya Waghmode completed his 10th first-class century but Baroda despite Hardik Pandya's 73, failed to take the lead. Royston Dias was the pick of the Mumbai bowlers finishing with 4/99 in his 31 overs.
Pandya, after his five-for in the first innings then struck twice in the final session first picking up Aditya Tare and then castling Karsh Kothari for a duck. At the end of day 3, Mumbai led Baroda by 49 runs with eight wickets in hand.
In the other Group A game, Maharashtra following on after being bowled for 247 in reply to Saurashtra's 398, finished the third day on 157/3 having gained a lead of six runs. For Saurashtra, Chetan Sakariya was the pick of the bowlers in the first innings returning 63 in 16.2 overs while Maharastra's Kedar Jadhav missed out on a century by just a run, falling for 99.
Away in Surat, Karnataka gained ascendancy after the batsmen helped them take an impressive 173-run lead. Prateek Jain and K Gowtham then had the hosts in all sorts of strife at 6/2 before Bhargav Merai (74) and Rujul Bhatt (82) added some stability with a 134-run stand for the third wicket. Gujarat finished day 3 on 187/3 leading Karnataka by 14 runs with 7 wickets remaining.
Aniket Choudhary stars in Rajasthan win
In a bowler-dominated Group C clash between Rajasthan and Odisha, visitors Rajasthan blew away the hosts by 35 runs in Bhubaneswar. Chasing 173 for a win, regular strikes by Aniket Choudhary, who finished with match-figures of 10/74 pushed the hosts on the backfoot as they were shot out for just 137 in 45.2 overs. Only Suryakant Pradhan with a 56 added some respectability to Odisha's score.
In the other Group C game, Jharkhand ended day 3 in cruise control after pacers Varun Aaron and Rahul Shukla picked up a combined tally of 9 wickets to bowl Uttar Pradesh for 243 and take a 111-run lead. While Shukla finished with figures of 5/65, Aaron had 4/59 in his 17 overs. For UP, Suresh Raina struck a plucky 75. Jharkhand then carried on the good work to finish on a strong 143/2 having attained an overall lead of 254 runs with 8 wickets in hand.
