Highlights

11:36(IST)
11:31(IST)

Virat Kohli certainly seems to be in an aggressive mood here, most vocal player on the field and still looks disappointed by his dismissal. Just 1 run from the first over here as Ishant troubles Finch a bit with the delivery coming in.

11:16(IST)

ALL OUT: What a shot by Bumrah as he takes on the attack to Lyon. But the very next ball he edges the ball to first slip, and India are all out for 283. What a sorry batting display by the Indians.

11:15(IST)

OUT: Pant's cameo comes to an end as he goes for 36. He targets midwicket against Lyon, but is caught in the deep by Mitchell Starc. India are 279/9.

11:12(IST)

Till now Umesh has shown the heart to grind it out against the Aussie bowlers. Now the onus is on Pant to score the runs as India move to 279/8.

11:04(IST)
11:00(IST)

FOUR, SIX: Rishabh Pant has decided to go for his shots as he hits Lyon for a six and a four off consecutive deliveries. And the lead for Australia is now 55. With not much batting left this is the right way to go. India are 271/8.

10:49(IST)

Every run for India is important here. Once the lead comes below 50, India would breathe a sigh of relief. Such has been the struggle for the batsmen till now. India are 260/8.

10:44(IST)

It's just a matter of time till Lyon removes the last two wickets as well. India are paying for having a rather ordinary tail. India are 257/8.

10:42(IST)
10:35(IST)

OUT: As expected, Indian tail is not putting up a show against the Aussies. Lyon tosses the ball up and Ishant gives a simple catch to the bowler. India are 254/8.

10:32(IST)

And Indian players make way to the middle after the lunch. They face an uphill task here at the moment. This is not looking good for the visitors. It's 253/7.

10:02(IST)
09:48(IST)

OUT: Another one bites the dust as this is easy wickets for Australia. Lyon turns one from outside off, and Shami gets a faint edge. He departs for a nought as India are 252/7.

09:43(IST)

That is disaster for India as Kohli has edged one from Cummins. Handscomb is claiming a catch. The umpires are checking if the ball hit the ground first. He looks out. India are 251/6.

09:36(IST)

250 UP: Kohli just reaches out a length ball from Lyon and dispatches it to the covers boundary for a four. That takes India to 250. Brilliant batting by the skipper.

09:31(IST)

90 overs are up and Australia, despite Kohli being on the crease, are still ahead. Till the time India doesn't trim down that lead, India would be in danger. It's 245/5.

09:22(IST)

The lead is under 100 and Indian batsmen need to be really careful here. It'll be lunch in close to half an hour and Indian cannot afford to lose another wicket. India are 234/5.

09:13(IST)

It will be interesting to see as to how Rishabh Pant plays with skipper Kohli. India need a big partnership here as there is not much batting left after this pair. Meanwhile India gets four byes from Starc. India are 229/5.

09:06(IST)

OUT: That is an unfortunate end to what could have been a brilliant innings by Vihari. Hazlewood dismisses him caught behind for 20. India are 223/5 and in trouble once again.

08:56(IST)

This looks like a good pitch to bat on now. India will have to make the most of this opportunity and at least get 400 runs on the board to inch ahead of the Aussies. If that happens, it will be India's match to lose. India are 220/4 as Kohli flashes hard and gets a six over third man off Hazlewood.

08:54(IST)
08:49(IST)
08:44(IST)

Aussies have taken the second new ball and this is the period when the batsmen have to be very careful. Having said that the pitch hasn't thrown any surprises till now. India are 209/4.

08:39(IST)

100 FOR KOHLI: What a brilliant way to bring up 25th Test ton. Kohli just guides the ball past long off to get a four. What and innings this has been from the Indian skipper as he scores a fighting ton in 214 balls.

08:36(IST)

FOUR: Kohli moves into the 90s with a cracking from through the covers off Lyon. To add to that Vihari is also batting well with the senior partner. India move to 201/4.

08:28(IST)

After the fall of Rahane, Vihari and Kohli have been very positive. Vihari in his short stay at the crease has impressed. India move to 191/4.

08:17(IST)

Vihari has only played 14 deliveries till now, but then his forward defence has been a sight to behold. India need him to play well with the skipper and make a mark for himself in the side. India are 187/4.

08:13(IST)
08:05(IST)

In a surprise move Cummins has replaced Lyon. And he is right on the money. Paine want to go full throttle at Kohli, as this is the best time to get his wicket. A maiden from the bowler means India are 180/4.

Day 2 report: Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane scored unbeaten half-centuries to leave the second Test against Australia in Perth tantalisingly poised at the end of the second day.

India were 172 for 3, trailing Australia by 154 runs with Kohli on 82 and Rahane on 51. India had earlier bowled out Australia for 326 in the morning session, with Ishant bagging four wickets. Batting in the fourth innings isn't going to get any easier, making India's first innings all the more important. They needed a good start, but got anything but it as they lost both openers with just eight on board. M Vijay missed an in-swinger from Mitchell Starc and fell for a duck, once again pushing at a delivery he should have been defending. KL Rahul then played all over a beauty of a Josh Hazlewood yorker soon after lunch. At 8 for 2, India needed either a counter-attack or a stubborn resistance. They got a bit of both in the form of Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. Kohli got off the blocks quickly, driving Hazlewood for three fours in an over. Pujara was being Pujara, just defending and dead-batting and leaving alone balls in old-fashioned manner. Kohli raced to 18 off 10, but he slowed down with the arrival of Nathan Lyon. The off-spinner was as tight as he could be, and choked the run flow. It allowed the pacers to attack relentlessly from the other end. India scored only 23 runs in a 20-over period at one stage. They didn't hit a boundary for 22 straight overs.

Kohli did chase a few balls outside off, but fortunately for India, didn't edge. Apart from the odd flashy shots, he and Pujara were largely solid and took India to tea without any further damage. Pujara fell in a rather soft manner post tea when he gloved Mitchell Starc down leg-side to wicketkeeper Tim Paine after a 103-ball 24. The 74-run partnership had been broken after 33 overs, but India were still in a spot of bother at 82 for 3. The arrival of Rahane changed the momentum a little and gave the innings an impetus. He took on the bowling almost immediately, pulling and upper-cutting the pacers for boundaries. Rahane also slashed Starc over the third man boundary for six, but was also fortunate to not edge a few wild slashes away from his body.

Rahane's first 22 balls produced 23 runs, and then he settled down. Moving on to the second stage of his innings, he was a bit more cautious but kept the runs coming with the odd boundary. It allowed Kohli to be a bit more brisk too, the Indian captain getting past his half-century slashing Cummins for a boundary. Rahane moved through his 40s to the 50-run mark with two beautiful shots off Hazlewood. He first played a lovely straight drive which forced Hazlewood to go short. Once the bowler did that, he upper-cut to the third man fence. The vice-captain and captain stayed on till the end - just what India would have wanted given they have a long tail. Earlier, Australia stretched their score from 277 for 6 to 326 with Paine and Cummins gradually increasing India's frustration. The duo batted out the first hour without damage, while India for some reason didn't start with Jasprit Bumrah, the best bowler on the first day. With the score on 310, Umesh Yadav finally broke the 69-run stand with a peach of a delivery that bowled Cummins. Bumrah trapped Paine lbw two balls later, after which Ishant Sharma got the last two wickets to end with a four-wicket haul.
