Months ago, when Marriott opened the city’s first serviced apartments in the Gachibowli area, I cringed when I saw the establishment had opened at a mall, thinking how downmarket it would have been. However, upon my first visit, it works out great given the residents have access to a city’s worth of groceries, entertainment, restaurants and more.
Surely Marriott Executive Apartment (MEA) would have their own eatery though? Yes they do, and Mazzo is an underrated gem worth a visit. The place started out as a simple café which wasn’t totally intended for non-residents — but with a view of Gachibowli-Miyapur Road, the burgeoning realm of Cyberabad and the thickets of Botanical Gardens proved an opportunity to open as a full-fledged restaurant to everyone.

Working with Executive chef Guru Nathan, chef Amit Thakur is a magnet for great energy; at 21 years-old, he has a resumé most chefs would envy. Humble to the core, he says he just wants to make good food and that impression for long-stay guests is extremely important. “I often say hello to our regular guests, see how they’re faring but it’s also good to see what the local crowd who come in for the first time take away from here,” he says.
And there’s proof — not just in the pudding, but from the very first bite. Chef Amit sets before us a plate of broccoli florets drenched in cheese. While a simple-sounding dish, the broccoli is cooked to perfection while not being overpowered by the complementary dairy.
Treats galore The interiors at Mazzo; their prawn and broccoli appetisers
What follow are noodle-draped prawns and a plate of mutton fry with a delicious and not overwhelming coat of masala, ideal for the first-timers to the wonders of mutton vepudu, Telangana-style.
The buffet spread at Mazzo is a homely experience with a touch of glam. Biryanis upon biryanis and a custom salad-making station make the place feel a little bit more like home for residents and visitors alike. Their apple crumble alone is worth the drive over even though the main course and appetisers will leave you full.
The bar is also not one to miss out on; from a classic wine menu to eye-catching drinks, there’s much to enjoy while you sit poolside or lounge in the warm lighting inside. The mixology team here are streamlined are not about gimmicky drinks which are sadly all the rage in Hyderabad. At the end of your meal, it’s the palatable drinks and menu that’ll keep you coming back.
