COIMBATORE: Faculty shortage was the major problem plaguing technical institutions in the country, said M P Poonia, the vice-chairman of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). He said AICTE had recently issued notices to colleges across the country as they had faculty shortage. Poonia was at Nehru Group of Institutions at Thirumalayampalayam near the city on Saturday to address the Shri P K Das Memorial Award ceremony.
Speaking to TOI on the sidelines of the event, he said AICTE had conducted inspection in technical institutions across the country. “We have issued notices to 24 colleges in Tamil Nadu for lack of faculty. We have also issued notices to colleges in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh,” he said.
AICTE had recently conducted inspections in 46 polytechnic and 10 engineering colleges in the state and had issued notices to 18 polytechnic colleges and and six engineering colleges for various issues such as faculty shortage and lack of infrastructure. However, Tamil Nadu’s technical institutions were better among other states he said. “There are still shortcomings. But the country’s expectation of Tamil Nadu’s institutions is high so they should become role models,” he said.
If hard infrastructure is a bit more or less in institutions, they might be given a leeway, but AICTE was very particular about faculty strength, Poonia said. “Students come with a lot of expectations and if teachers are not there, their future is at stake. Across the country, faculty shortage is a major issues in both government and private technical institutions,” he said. The institutions which have been pulled up have time till August, when the next batch would start, to rectify faculty shortage, he said.
To ensure the high quality of teachers in technical institutions, AICTE had proposed to have mandatory training sessions for new recruits. Poonia said e-contents for eight training modules would be ready by January and the courses would be implemented from April.
A total of 37 teachers from institutions across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Puducherry, were honoured with the best faculty awards and lifetime achievement awards at the tenth Shri Shri P K Das Memorial Award ceremony at Nehru Group of Institutions.
