Foreign currency worth Rs 19L seized at airport
tnn | Dec 15, 2018, 23:50 ISTThiruvananthapuram: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized foreign currency worth Rs 20 lakh from a passenger at Trivandrum International Airport on Friday. The passenger was identified as Zainul Abid (25) hailing from Kanhangad.
Abid was scheduled to depart in Air India Express flight IX 539 Thiruvananthapuram -Dubai at 5.45pm. Based on intelligence information, officers intercepted him while he was waiting at the security area after completing emigration procedures.
It was found that foreign currency notes worth Rs 19.80 lakh were stacked in a side compartment of his bag and the section was found to be stitched with rexine fabric.
“The notes were found in denomination of US dollars 100 and Oman Rial of 5, 10 and 50. The notes were stacked in the bag such that it was difficult to find the separate section and the notes. He said he is going abroad in search of job. But he is actually a carrier and was going to Dubai on visiting visa,” said a DRI Officer.
A case has been registered and DRI officials have launched a probe in this regard.
