Ex-chief secretary Arun Bongirwar passes away

Nagpur: Former chief secretary Arun Bongirwar, 76, passed away early on Friday morning in Mumbai. An IAS officer of 1966 batch, he was an able administrator, known for his decisive leadership and mentored many young officers. He served as the 25th chief secretary of Maharashtra from 1999. Hailing from Yavatmal in Vidarbha, Bongirwar was ailing for the last few months

Bongirwar had distinction of serving two governments headed by different political parties as chief secretary. He also served as principal secretary to two different Chief Ministers — the late Sudhakarrao Naik and Manohar Joshi. As Municipal Commissioner of Pune he undertook perhaps the first slum rehabilitation project without displacing the slum dwellers at Parvati hills making it a national model. He also worked as collector for six years in Osmanabad and Nagpur and divisional commissioner of Aurangabad, Pune and Konkan. His long experience in revenue department enabled him to lead the Bongirwar committee report on revenue administration. A Vidarbhaite, in successive governments he championed the cause of addressing the developmental backlog of Vidarbha region by balanced financial allocations and developing the mineral resources of the region.


He is survived by daughters Deepti, Gargi and son Piyush. His son-in-law Praveen Pardeshi is additional chief secretary to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
