NOIDA: A minor girl was detained for stealing cash and valuables worth around Rs 1.5 lakh from a house in Sector 45. She has admitted to committing the crime and said she wanted to buy chocolates and toys for her siblings with the money.

According to police, the 11-year-old’s father is an auto driver. The theft took place in the sector’s Sadarpur Colony on Monday. Rajkumar Sharma (27), the complainant, said he had gone out for some work in the neighbourhood and had left the door of his ground-floor rented flat open as he was away for only five minutes.

“When I returned, I found four gold rings and Rs 65,000 in cash were missing. Footage from a CCTV camera installed near the gate showed the girl entering the house and coming out with the valuables,” Sharma said. “On Thursday, I spotted the girl near my house and realised that her face matched that of the girl captured on camera. My friends and I caught the girl and called police,” Sharma said.

The girl admitted to the theft and said she wanted to buy chocolates and toys for her two younger sisters and brother. “The girl told police that a woman took all the stolen items and cash from her. The woman gave her the address and gave her Rs 500 in lieu of the items,” said Uday Pratap Singh, SHO of Sector 39 police station.
