Chikkodi observes bandh for district status

BELAGAVI: Chikkodi town observed a total bandh on Friday demanding separate district status.
Thousands of activists took out a protest rally from KC Road and blocked Sankeshwar- Jewargi Road at Basaveshwar Circle.
Members from Dalit and Kannada organizations, Chikkodi Bar Association, vendors associations and students participated in the protest rally. All schools and colleges, commercial establishments, theatres, hotels were shut. Bus services were brought to a halt with protesters demandeding that Chikkodi be announced a district before the end of the legislature session in Belagavi.
Allamaprabhu Swamy of Chinchani said no development work is taking place in Chikkodi area. If the government delays the issue of bifurcating Belagavi district, the clamour to join Maharashtra from the border districts will grow, he cautioned.
Chikkodi Zilla Horata Samiti president BR Sangappago l said they have been fighting for Chikkodi to be declared as a district from the past 25 years. He questioned when small places like Gadad, Haveri and Ramnagar can be districts why not Chikkodi?
Former president of Chikkodi town panchayat threaten ed to launch an indefinite strike if Chikkodi is not declared a district place before the e nd of legislature session. Local leaders will meet CM HD Kumaraswamy of December 17.
Sadalaga bandh today
Sadalaga town has called for a bandh on Saturday urging for the town to be declared a taluk and Chikkodi a district. Activists plan to take out a protest rally at 9am from Gandhi Circle.
