Mangaluru: The II additional district and sessions court, Dakshina Kannada, which is also the designated court for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) cases, convicted a person of sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl, whom she fondly called ‘maama,’ on Friday.

The accused is Chandrashekhar alias Rajesh, 49, now residing in Kankanady. The incident took place on July 23, 2016.

The incident came to light only a few days later, when the victim complained of a burning sensation in her private part while her mother was bathing her. Following this, a complaint was filed at the Konaje police station.

Special public prosecutor C Venkataramana Swamy told reporters after the conviction, that a total 15 witnesses were examined. The statements of the child and the medical officer, in addition to the forensic science laboratory report, played key roles in convicting Chandrashekhar.

The convict is a painter by profession, is married and has children. The quantum of punishment is expected to be announced on Saturday.
