Army Service Corps celebrates raising day

PUNE: The Army Service Corps (ASC), the oldest and the largest administrative service in the Indian Army celebrates its 258th Corps day recently.


From a modest beginning as the administrative component of the Armies during the days of the East India Company in 1760, it has steadily extended the scope of its activities till now when it operates on land, water and air.


“The Corps has been the logistic backbone of Indian Army during various operations both pre and post-Independence. Known as the Commissariat Department before Independence, the Corps participated in various operations and expeditions in the North West Frontier, Mesopotamia and Gallipoli. The battle of Sidi Barrani, battle of Keren, the Arakan campaign, seize of Imphal and victory in Burma during the Second World War had an overwhelming presence of the Army Service Corps soldiers and resources,” states a press release issued by Southern Command.


Since Independence, the ASC has taken part in operations in Kashmir, Nagaland, against the Chinese in Ladakh in 1962 and Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. It also took part in Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) operations in Sri Lanka. During operation Vijay the Corps excelled at providing invaluable logistic support in the difficult and treacherous terrain of Kargil sector.


The brave soldiers of Army Service Corps have been awarded 568 honors pre-Independence and one Ashok Chakra, one Maha Vir Chakra, 14 Vir Chakras, four Kirti Chakras, 21 Shaurya Chakras and 125 Sena Medals Post-Independence.
